COURSE TITLE                              : ELL 414 Translation III

AIMS AND DESCRIPTION

Improvement and refreshment of a range of techniques and technologies, providing practical  information on how to translate faster and more accurately, how to adapt to the new technologies, and how to become more aware of the changing market. Topics also addresss one of the central issues in literary translation,  namely the relationship between the creative freedom enjoyed by the translator and the multiplicity of constraints to which translation  as a process and product is necessarily subject. The development of the concept of norms and the interplay between the translator’s responses to expectations, constraints and pressures in a social context, are also studied. Comparative texts from English into Turkish and from Turkish into English  will be studied from time to time. The  aim of this course is to acquaint the students with concepts related to translation and then practice translation through selected English and Turkish texts from different fields of study.

 

1-      (On the part of the students) to be able to translate mostly written texts from Turkish into English as well as English into Turkish

2-      To be aware of creative freedom in translation and the restrictions to be followed

3-      To discern good and bad translations and to try to do good translations

4-      To share and notice the difficulty encountered by translators

5-      To be familiar with the new techniques and technology in this field

6-      Translation criticism

 

COURSE OUTLINE

1-      The concept of translation: Language, structure, style, meaning, communication, cultural factors

2-      Translation theories : The students are expected to be able to comprehend and interpret the basic concepts of translation, translation theories and to apply those theories in practice. The students are also expected to develop an awareness of theory and a more conscious knowledge of how they themselves approach the task of translating.

3-      Discussions on the translation of the texts

4-      Discussions on the overall difficulties in translation

5-      Translation of the texts from English into Turkish

6-       Translation of texts from Turkish into English

7-       Translation criticism: The student is expected to attain the talent of solving the problems that the translator confronts within the framework of translation criticism; whether the solutions are correct or not and also are these acceptable from the viewpoint of translation studies. Defining areas of critical interest in published translations of literary and philosophical texts. Critical scrutiny from different perspectives pertaining to recent developments in translation studies. Students are expected to write a term paper.

8-      Literary Translation: Students study and analyse literary texts and genres for the purpose of translating them within the framework of the principles of literary translation. Analysis of literary discourse with a view to devising strategies for the translation of a wide variety of  texts. Special emphasis will be  put on  fiction and poetry. Application of strategies through constant practice.

 

COURSE  REQUIREMENTS

Punctuality and attendence are expected and each student will have to turn at least one assignement  for  which s/he is to talk to the instructor to be approved. Students are expected to translate the assigned texts before coming to the class and to take part in class activities. Attendence is a course requirement. Attendence records are kept and students must attend at least 75% of scheduled classes. All core course material will be distributed in class.

GRADING

Each mid-term  exam           :   15% + 15% = 30 %

Term Project                         :   20 %

Final exam                            :   30 %

Active class participation    :   10 %

Assignements                       :   10 %
